Blood Clots Travel

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where a dangerous blood clot forms deep inside one of your veins. Anyone can develop DVT, but the risk is significantly higher when for people on long car, plane, or train rides.
Because when blood pools it clots.
When you sit for long periods of time, circulation slows down and can begin to pool. Anyone who has a history of blood clots should take precautions when sitting on anything for three hours or more. You can read more about DVT on the Centers for Disease Control and Protection webpage, Blood Clots During Travel.

The Wittington Hospital in London, UK, recommends the following when travelling:
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • Move around as often as you can. If you are travelling by car, stop and stretch every few hours. If by plane, get up and walk. You may also want to wear compression stockings if you will be in the plane for more than a few hours.
  • Drink plenty of water and, if you drink alcohol, remember that its effects are exacerbated by changes in cabin pressure.
